NUSD currently employs five Registered Nurses (RNs) who oversee health services at our school sites. The Registered Nurse may also be referred to as District Nurse or Credentialed School Nurse, overseeing multiple school sites and holding either a Master's or Bachelor’s degree as well as specialized training for the school environment. The Credentialed School Nurse focuses on responding to emergencies, case management, the development and implementation of Individualized Health Care Plans, state reporting for mandated health screenings, immunization compliance, and identifying health barriers to learning. They are also active members in the Individualized Education Program (IEP) team, where they conduct formal health assessments to determine how a student’s medical needs impact their ability to access their curriculum.

Under the supervision of our District Nurses, our ten Licensed Vocational Nurses (LVNs) provide direct, hands-on nursing care. They focus on administering medications and immunizations, providing diabetic care, performing specialized procedures such as G-tube feeding, catheterizations, tracheostomy care, and providing 1-on-1 support for medically fragile students.

In addition to our Nurses in the district, each school site has a Health Assistant who assists with daily student needs in the health office. The Health Assistants are trained in first aid, CPR, and participate in yearly health trainings provided by the School Nurse.

The Health Services team is dedicated to fostering safe school environments and providing essential care for student success. We know that when students feel their best, they perform their best in the classroom.
