Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month
Asian American and Pacific Islander American Heritage Month
May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage (AAPI) Month! Throughout the year, especially in May, NUSD celebrates the achievements by Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders and recognize their central role in U.S. history. Asian and Pacific Islanders are people from all of the Asian continent and the Pacific islands of Melanesia.
Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders were first recognized by the U.S. House and Senate in 1978, when the “Asian/Pacific American Heritage Week” was passed. Then in 1990, Congress passed Public Law 101-283, which expanded the weeklong celebration to a monthlong. Two years later, Congress passed Public Law 102-450, which designated all of May as Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month.
Natomas Unified recognizes the month of May and encourages all schools to provide opportunities for students, their families, staff, and the entire community to participate in enriching lessons and activities in celebration of AAPI month! We invite you to explore this page for resources to honor AAPI month.
Feast and Learn
For AAPI month, we’d like to share this pho recipe from Kim! Kim works for our Nutrition Services department. Watch our latest Feast and Learn at the NUSD Table video as she cooks the dish, and shares how the dish has become a part of family tradition.
Also, be sure to check out more recipes from NUSD staff, families, and students from throughout the school year in this cookbook.
