Filipino American History Month
Filipino American History
Filipino Americans are the second-largest Asian American group in the nation and the third-largest ethnic group in California, after Latinas/os and African Americans. The celebration of Filipino American History Month in October commemorates the first recorded presence of Filipinos in the continental United States, which occurred on October 18, 1587, when “Luzones Indios” came ashore from the Spanish galleon Nuestra Senora de Esperanza and landed at what is now Morro Bay, California. In 2009, U.S. Congress recognized October as Filipino American History Month in the United States.
Feast and Learn: Pancit Bihon
In the month of October, we celebrate National Filipino American History Month. Thank you to all the Pinoy Americans who have helped shape our culture, government, and our continuing story in America. To celebrate, Natomas Unified has prepared a Feast and Learn at the NUSD Table Video on how to cook pancit bihon, with Chef Vince Caguin; the Executive Director of the Nutrition Services and Warehouse Department at NUSD; and student chef Dante, who is also a CTE Culinary student. Watch the video below! Be sure to follow along with the recipe card above. Kain na tayo! (Let’s eat!)
