The Expanded Learning Opportunities program is an educational initiative that provides students with additional learning experiences outside of the traditional school day. “Expanded learning” means before school, after school, summer, or intersession learning programs that focus on developing the academic, social, emotional, and physical needs and interest of pupils through hands-on, engaging learning experiences. It is the intent of the Legislature that expanded learning programs are pupil-centered, results driven, include community partners, and complement, but do not replicate, learning activities in the regular school day and school year.”

NUSD branded ELO-P as LEAP to capture what opportunities ELO-P presents. LEAP encompasses learning recovery, enrichment opportunities, athletics, academics, arts, and activities (LEAP) and currently prioritizes unduplicated TK-8 grade students.

The program aims to be inclusive and serve students in grades TK-8.

Participation in LEAP Academy is NOT required. A parent or guardian must opt-in to participate.

No. It is the intent of the state law that students be present for the full program day, including day classes and the after-school program. Exceptions are made for doctors' appointments or special circumstances that are not regularly occurring absences.

Although the ELO-P initiative allows districts to charge parents, NUSD does not currently impose a fee structure on our families. Students are currently able to attend the LEAP academy programs free of charge.

Students are encouraged to participate every day. Some sites have an Early Release policy as required by the ASES grant. Your child will need to follow the attendance policy and procedures of the site program.

Each student is eligible to participate in the LEAP Academy program. Students will be enrolled based on the date and time their applications were received. Please also note that due to ongoing workforce shortages, students might be added to a waitlist until staffing meets ratio requirements, which would then move them from the waitlist to enroll in the LEAP Academy program.

The LEAP Academy integrates homework time as well as enrichment providers to provide activities throughout the after-school program. It is recommended that students not be picked up prior to 4:30 to allow students to participate in these activities. Some sites have required attendance based on the ASES grant, where attendance may affect student enrollment. Please adhere to the attendance policy specific to your students' site. All students must be picked up before 6:00.

No, an enrollment is only valid for that school. If a student transfers school, they will need a new application at the new school. LEAP enrollment at the new school cannot be guaranteed.

LEAP Academy programs are site-based and designed to support students directly at their home school. This structure allows us to maintain safe dismissal procedures, appropriate staffing ratios, and consistent daily schedules aligned with each campus.

If a family is interested in a different school’s after-school program, the student would need to be enrolled at that school during the regular school day. For information about school transfers, please contact the Enrollment Department.
