Changes to Our Safety Plan

Published 10-22-2025

Message from Dr. Robyn Castillo, Superintendent

Recently, we were informed by the Sacramento Police Department that our current 3-year contract, which provides three school resource officers (SROs), will be terminated at the end of this calendar year due to a significant officer shortage in the city. Natomas Unified has always supported having SROs on our campuses and appreciates the long-standing partnership we’ve had with them. Our SROs have developed proactive relationships with our students and staff and are always ready to assist and respond to safety concerns. Although each SRO is assigned to one of our high schools, they assist as needed at all schools throughout the district.

With the safety of our students and staff as our highest priority, we have been working diligently  alongside our school leadership team and Safety and Safe Schools department to explore other options to help us maintain a safe environment. Through these collaborative efforts, we have created a plan to support a smooth transition from SROs to our new safety staff. We have shared this with our labor leaders and now, we are sharing it with our families, all staff, and community partners.

We have created a new high level school safety position to be assigned to each high school. Similar to the SROs, these individuals will be available to assist at any school in the district.  Their primary job will be to serve and support an assigned high school and handle complex safety, intervention, and prevention duties at their assigned sites and other NUSD schools when necessary. We are actively recruiting qualified candidates for these openings which will be posted to our website. In addition to these new safety positions, we will also increase the number of Campus Safety Specialists at our middle and high schools to have increased adult presence to help maintain a safe environment. These openings will also be posted soon on our website.

While this important work is being done to prepare for the transition, our existing safety measures will continue. Here are a few examples already in place:

  • Our Safety and Safe Schools Department, which was established in 2022, provides safety training to our school site staff and has existing safety positions including Safety and Climate Liaisons that support schools and students and a Communication Specialist/Dispatcher to monitor and direct calls from our safety line.

  • Partnership with school safety consultants that provide daily support of our safety efforts throughout the district.

  • Partnership with the Sandy Hook Promise “See Something, Say Something” anonymous reporting system to provide our students a safe and anonymous system to report any concerns. SHP posters are visible and publicized at all of our schools.

All of these safety measures provide layers of protection for our students and staff when at NUSD school sites. While we are working on our new safety plan, we wanted to make sure that our families and staff were made aware of this information and our continued efforts to provide a safe and secure environment.
