Elementary Report Cards

WHAT’S IN A GRADE?
Students are evaluated on their progress toward meeting end of the year standards. Their grades will be reported like this at the end of each trimester:

  • 4 Exceeds grade-level expectations; demonstrates strong independence
  • 3 Meets grade-level expectations; requires minimal support
  • 2 Approaching grade-level expectations; requires moderate support
  • 1 Minimal progress on grade-level standards; requires significant support
  • NA Not covered this trimester
  • + slightly above the standard grade
  • – slightly below the standard grade

HOW DO TEACHERS DETERMINE GRADES?

  • Teachers use multiple measures to determine how well your child is performing in relation to the standards. Students may demonstrate their mastery of course content through classwork, homework, tests, projects, participation, and other assignments.
  • Students are evaluated by what they need to understand by the end of the school year.
  • Most students will demonstrate a minimum to partial understanding at the end of the 1st or 2nd trimester.
  • As the year progresses, students will develop a deeper understanding of the content standards.
  • As educators, we use multiple measures to assess a student’s progress toward college and career readiness, including course grades, assessments, and other assignments. We encourage parents to do the same and use report card grades in combination with other information to identify strengths and opportunities for improvement.

HOW CAN I MONITOR MY CHILD’S PROGRESS IN SCHOOL?
NUSD uses a student information system called Infinite Campus. Parents and Guardians are able to view their child(ren)’s grades and attendance through the Infinite Campus Parent Portal. Click here to sign in to Parent Portal. Report cards will be prepared at the end of each semester or trimester as in previous school years. Check with your school office to find out how report cards are distributed at your school.

WHAT CAN I DO IF MY CHILD IS STRUGGLING IN SCHOOL?
If you have questions or concerns that your child is not meeting the standards, talk with your child’s teacher(s) to find ways to support and reinforce key learning.

ARE STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES HELD TO THE SAME STANDARDS?
Yes. State and federal laws, including The Elementary and Secondary Education Act and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEIA) require each state, school district, and school to hold all students to grade level standards. Student with disabilities are entitled to supplemental aides and services to assist them in meeting these standards.  Depending upon individual needs, a student may receive either an accommodation or a modification.
