Read to Succeed: Early Learners Initiative
Natomas Unified has launched the Read to Succeed Early Learners Literacy initiative, focusing on enhancing literacy skills for our youngest learners. The initiative launched on May 9, 2025, with Blast Off with Books! This festive event at all NUSD schools included activities, guest readers, and book distribution for students in transitional kindergarten - second grade. Each student in these grades received the book, “Mae Among the Stars,” by Roda Ahmed. It’s a beautifully written story about Mae Jemison and her goal to become an astronaut. While at school, there will be a focus on the following areas:
- Science of reading
- Foundational reading skills
- Common early literacy assessments
- Early literacy resources for classrooms and homes
- In-class coaching for teachers
- Professional development for teachers and administrators
We invite our families to partner with us by incorporating reading time at home and activities to make reading fun and engaging!
