Read to Succeed: Early Learners Initiative

blast off with books

Natomas Unified is excited to launch the Read to Succeed Early Learners Literacy initiative with a focus on increasing literacy skills for our youngest learners. The initiative launches on May 9, 2025, with Blast Off with Books! This festive event at all NUSD schools will include activities, guest readers, and book distribution for students in grades transitional kindergarten - second grade throughout the district. Each student in these grades will receive the book, “Mae Among the Stars,” by Roda Ahmed. It’s a beautifully written story about Mae Jemison and her goal to become an astronaut. Throughout the summer months and 2025-2026 school year, families will be provided with challenges and incentives to support reading and understanding at home.  While at school, there will be a focus on the following areas:

  • Science of reading
  • Foundational reading skills
  • Common early literacy assessments
  • Early literacy resources for classrooms and homes
  • In-class coaching for teachers
  • Professional development for teachers and administrators
