NUSD Summer Digital Backpack

The LEAP Academy will operate on three campuses (Jefferson School, H. Allen Hight Elementary, and Witter Ranch School) from May 28 through July 18, except June 19th and July 4th. The program will offer learning opportunities delivering literacy and math support to students based on identified academic needs.  Families of students with a demonstrated need for additional support will receive an email invitation to participate in summer programming. Applications for all current NUSD students will open in March. 

In partnership with our community-based organization, summer school will offer nine (9) hours of programming from 7:30 am to 4:30 pm, including enrichment opportunities in art, athletics, science, and technology. 

The LEAP Academy Summer School program is funded by the Expanded Learning Opportunities Grant (E-LOP). This grant outlines that students identified in the following groups have priority enrollment.

• Foster Youth
• Students experiencing homelessness
• English Learners
• Students receiving free/reduced lunch services
   

All Things Pretty is a mentoring program focused on female students entering the 4th and 6th grades. Girls will learn about the importance of their voices while building strong self-esteem and confidence to develop their leadership and social-emotional skills. They will also learn how to foster and nurture healthy and positive relationships with their peers. The program will be offered for 4th-5th grade girls at Jefferson School from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm beginning on June 2 and ending on June 13 and for 6th grade girls at Jefferson School from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm beginning June 23 and ending June 27. 6th and 7th grade students will be provided the opportunity for an academic enrichment program where they will work on enhancing their skills in Math, ELA, and Career Technical Education. The summer program will run 4 weeks, beginning on Monday, June 2nd  through Friday, June 27th. The start time will be 8:30 am and will end at 2:00 pm. Students will receive daily lunch. This program will be another opportunity for our students to enhance their learning.

NUSD is partnering with North Natomas Jibe to provide three 1-week summer bike camps loaded with fun in June. Camp is for middle schoolers (starting 7th and 8th grades in the 2025/2026 school year in North Natomas) who already know how to ride a bike. Campers boost their confidence by exploring local bike routes and learning basic bike upkeep skills. We ride a little more each day to parks, restaurants, and cool places. Camp includes a bike tour of Old Sacramento and a visit to the Sacramento Bike Kitchen. Students even learn how to load their bikes on a city bus! Bikes, helmets, snacks, and lunch are provided. Start and end each day at Inderkum High School. All 3 sessions run 8:30 am to 2:30 pm.

The summer program for our English Learners will focus on providing direct support to high school students enrolled in Summer School for the purpose of earning credits for classes needed for graduation and support with completing A-G credits.

Summer at City Hall is an interactive learning experience that provides current 9th, 10th, and 11th-grade students an opportunity to learn about local government processes, the tiers of the city, and how to become an active citizen in the community. Program participants are supported by adult allies, including credentialed teachers, city staff, and peer mentors, facilitating learning opportunities focused on civic engagement, local-level governmental structures, and youth development practices. Upon completion of the program, participants will receive (5) high school elective credits and a monetary stipend. 

Students who are interested in participating in the program must apply with City Hall using the form linked here by April 18, 2025 at 11:59 PM. The application will open on March 3, 2025, and close on April 18, 2025. All students who apply will be given an opportunity to interview for one of the 20 spots with NUSD staff. The majority of communications regarding interviews will be done through the student’s school email or Student Square. After the interviews, City Hall will directly notify students who are selected to participate in the program.
 

The Youth Workforce Program is for incoming 11th and 12th-grade students to participate in a weeklong series of interactive workshops where they will gain the knowledge and skills needed to join the workforce. Students will have the opportunity to learn how to build a resume, dress for success, interview skills, and hear from working professionals about the variety of careers available. At the end of the workshops, students will get a chance to interview with local businesses for an internship or paid job. Hiring is determined by the local businesses conducting the interviews, and not all students will receive an offer. While not all students may be offered an internship or paid job at the end of the program, they will have the tools to assist them with applying for future jobs. This program is in partnership with the Natomas Chamber of Commerce and SAFE Credit Union. 

The workshops will be from June 9 to 13 from 10 am to 2 pm, except on Friday, June 13th, which will end at 3 pm to accommodate interviews. Starting on April 7, 2025, students can submit an application to be considered for the program through this link by May 2, 2025, at 4 pm.
